Week 3 of Leisure Business Class

Leisure is always done with the intention of gaining a benefit, be it a practical, emotional, psychological or spiritual need

There is a large variety of different kinds of Leisure Businesses, so many that the class would probably take much longer than normal, and that’s saying something when our class is longer than other classes.

IT , Sales and marketing, Human Resources, Finance and Administration are always present in most if not all Leisure Businesses

Human resources

Basically managing people, employees, and everything in relation to it. From acquiring people, to training people, to using people, to maintaining people and their effectiveness, motivation and morale. Human resources is important because in a service industry, people are inseparable from the product you’re selling. If you sell a product that is below quality standard, what would that say about your business? What if your product was unavailable for any reason? Humans are fickle creatures, many things affect them and their behavior. That’s not even counting their beliefs or mental conditions. That’s why Human Resources is important.

They also manage their health and safety, workplace environments as well as working conditions to make sure that there aren’t any laws broken or people’s labor abused.

It is also sometimes referred to human capital over the usual human resources because they refer to capital in the same way they refer to assets. The name is changed in that way because resources can run out, but capital (or humans as an asset) can be used again and again to produce more money, and hence makes much more sense.

Finance

Pretty self-explanatory. Money, and how you can make more. Be it from planning how much money needed and spent, budgeting, paying what’s necessary, allocating money where it is needed, and most important of all, keeping track of where all the money goes.

Money in a large organization goes to a lot of places, and there’s a lot of it going around. When you play around with that much money, it’s difficult for it to not go someplace you don’t want it to go, say to a supplier that costs more than normal when it could’ve gone someplace better, or perhaps an employee who thinks that he could make a quick buck simply by messing around with the records. This is why it’s important to keep track of how much money you have and where it goes.

Administration

Administration supports other areas of the organization. Many businesses have more than one department or part of a business. Like a body needs a brain in order to function, organizations require administrative departments to make sure it doesn’t fall unto itself.

Sales and Marketing

Sales and marketing are in charge of getting more customers. How? Through telling the right people that “Hey! We have this service/product, you know you want it.”

They deal with Promotional strategies, where they advertise in many creative ways to the people they’re targeting. Pricing, that might entice people to buy it. Planning and researching on who wants their products/services and how to get to them.

Information Technology

This department is pretty straightforward. They help connect other divisions and train people in using technology available in the organization they work in. It really all depends on how much technology they use. Motels might be very low-tech, with only a website to manage while four-star hotels and above use IT systems like Oracle to help manage what rooms are available, dirty or occupied as well as the financial accounts of everyone who are registered into the system as a guest, to the employees who check in and check out from the system as well as their records down to the simple key cards that all the guests use to access their hotel rooms.

Some businesses use almost no technology while others completely rely on it, but IT will always be there. In this day and age, you’ll be at a major disadvantage as a business if you don’t use any form of IT in your organization.
